What is the difference between stereotyping and racism?
The two terms are close in meaning, but have vastly different implications. Matthew Foster writes, Someone saying Black people can run fast isnt racist. Its a stereotype of the black race. People saying Asians are really good at math isnt racist either, its a stereotype of the Asian Race. Stereotyping and racism may sometimes go hand in hand with each other, but they are not the same thing at all and one is not always found with the other.
So, stereotyping is making general statements and assumptions about a given group of people. Foster explains, Stereotypes are not inherently racist or founded on racism. Stereotyping is a simplified or standard concept or image of a group of people, based upon actions, dress, commonality, etc, held by a large or influential group of the people being stereotyped. Emos are all depressed, anyone with tattoos is a troublemaker, Mexicans are dirty, Asians are good at math, blacks can run fast and jump high, homosexuals are sexual deviants, people who dress a certain way are whores or sluts. Right, so they are assumptions we make about a group of people.
On the other hand, racism is different. It comes hand in hand with stereotyping, though. Foster writes, Racism is the explicit hatred or intolerance of another race or other races for no reason other than their skin color, their origins or even stereotypes associated with that race. It is a belief that involves the idea that ones own race is superior and has the right to rule others. In other words, racism is not about the assumption and more of a judgment and an act based on this assumption. Vs.com elaborates, Racism is based on religion, ethnicity and nationality of a person or group. Stereotyping is based on an idea that is believed by a set of people for another group or a person, regardless of their origin. Racism is illegal, stereotypes are not punishable, even if it has serious consequences. Differencebetween.net reiterates, ace hatred was used by Frederick Hertz in the 1920s and later was commonly used. In the 1930s, the word racism was used as the title of a book by Magnus Hirschfeld. It deals with the fact that people believe the traits of different people or groups of people are determined by the genetic constitution.
The website further complicates the term racism, though, by not limiting it to skin color or religion. Differencebetween.net adds, When racism is practiced, it causes some effects in the society which is called racial discrimination. The UN treats racial and ethnicity discrimination at the same level. There are many types of racial discrimination like institutional racism and economic racism.
Institutional racism refers to the benefits, rights, and preferential treatment of a certain race or the denial of the same for another race. Economic racism refers to the financial benefits enjoyed by a certain race or financial benefits denied by a certain race.
Either way, racism and stereotyping are dangerous to society as they dehumanize others and make it difficult to communicate.
